Frequently Asked Questions

How Efficient is a Heat Pump?

Electrical heat is 100% efficient; every 1 unit of electricity produces 1 unit of heat. Heat pumps however are commonly 300%-400% efficient because they are moving heat instead of creating it. Today's heat pumps are rated on SEER2 (cooling) and HSPF2 (Heating). HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2) is the scale used to rank the heating capabilities against other units. New units have a minimum of 7.5 HSPF2 with top tier models reaching a rating up to 10.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Air source heat pumps use the refrigeration cycle to move heat from one place to another. At the outdoor unit refrigerant is boiled off at an extremely low temperature and pressure drawing in heat from the environment. It is then compressed into a high temperature high pressure gas that travels through the piping to an indoor unit where heat is rejected and the gas condenses into a liquid. From there it returns back to the outdoor unit to start the cycle over again.

Why Would I Need a Heat Pump If I Already Have A Primary Heat Source?

Heat pumps work great for the majority of the year and can cut costs of oil or excess electricity.
